Le Lavandou
Sheltered by Cape Bénat, Le Lavandou, is a lovely seaside resort in the Var with a population of 5 000 inhabitants. «Lavandou» does not come from the lavender flower which immediately comes to mind but from the provençal word «lavadou», meaning washhouse.

Very sort after by the first tourist on paid holiday at the beginning of the century, Lavandou is appreciated for it beautiful beaches and its pier, for the Hyères Islands. If we go back in history, the origins of Le Lavandou are uncertain because not many archaeological traces remains. Nevertheless, a number of galleys must have passed nearby its coastline, in view of the numerous remains of amphoras gleaned by divers.
During 19th century Lavandou directed its main economic activity towards fishing. The port will be the first of the department to specialise in this activity until Toulon started to take on the same activity in the thirties. Nevertheless, its port still remains very lively. On this subject, it is necessary to lookout for the return of the fishing vessels in order to fill ones basket with the catch of the day. |
