This region concentrates everything that makes up the beauty and character of Provence. Plains, hills and massifs, dotted with olive trees, lavender and sweet-smelling garrigues offer sumptuous surroundings, where a truly gentle way of life reigns. The light in the area is exceptional and has been dear to many great painters, from Fragonard to Cézanne and Watteau.
The biggest stone aqueduct in the world can be found in Ventabren. It is 84 metres high and 375 metres long. Meyrargues also has an ancient medieval fortress. Many castles are also found in the region. Among them, Barben castle and its French-style garden, the castle of Sévigné in Lambesc or that of the «Empéri in Salor», that used to be the former residence of the Archbishop of Arles.
It is now dedicated to the army. In Lamanom, one can admire Calès circus and the troglodytes caves. The “aixoise” countryside still holds many other wonders that you will have the pleasure of discovering, while strolling under the blazing sun. |
