Massif of Sainte-Baume
Sainte-Baume is a holy mountain situated between Var and Bouches-du-Rhône. It is the Mecca of Provençal Christian mythology. According to tradition, it is said that Mary Magdalene took retreat in a cave at the foot of Saint Pilon, after having converted the inhabitants of Provence.

Reaching 1 148 meters at the «Signal des Béguines» and the «Joue de l’Aigle», Sainte-Baume is the highest secondary mountain chain in the region. Its exceptional panorama allows you to see the coast line. This is the case for Saint Pilon, from the Espigoulier Pass, at an altitude of 730 meters. A splendid view extends over the Aubagne Plain, Marseille, the «Chaîne de l’Etoile» and Saint Cyr.
The vegetation of Sainte-Baume is unusual for Provence. Beech trees and pine trees are found alongside each other with lime trees, maple trees and oaks or elms, amongst others, with ferns growing below. The presence of these trees explains the coolness of the area that is always shady. This undergrowth reflects a light that reinforces the impression of mystery and serenity for the hiker.
At the foot of the Massif, another important place of Christian culture is found : Saint Maximin's basilica. Saint Maximin was built on an old lake that belonged to the Dominican order and is the oldest Gothic monument in Provence. The basilica has three naves, accompanied by chapels. Fenestrado Baselico is the biggest with its 72,60 metres . The seven-sided apse is equally fantastic. The remains of Mary Magdalene are conserved in the crypt of Saint Maximin. To protect these relics, King René had the walls that surround the village constructed. The basilica is also known for its organ that was recently restored. The Dominicans, Isnard and his nephew Joseph, are responsible for this organ. A big cultural musical activity takes place here during the summer festivals.
