Glanum site

Glanum, in Saint-Rémy de Provence, is firstly a place of Celto-Ligurian settlement. The site was rapidly hellenized and the Gallo-Greek period extends from the 2nd to the 1st century B.C., and is followed by a Gallo-Roman period from the end of the 1st century A.D. to the 3rd century A.D.
Glanum site, Saint-Rémy de Provence, France

Because of the new constructions of the Roman period, many anterior constructions from the Ancient Greece disappeared or were demolished. The transformations of the architectural environment reveals the establishment of a new political order, by the governments of Augustus and Agrippa.

Building a monumental centre, which was also a political centre, with the forum, a basilica and the curia, was a complete change for a city which was before profoundly hellenized by its contacts with Massalia, the greek Marseilles. The archaeological collections, stemmed from the excavations, contain sculptures and everydaylife objects presented in the museum of the hôtel de Sade.
