The Basilica of Saint -Maximin
At the foot of the Massif Sainte Baume, another important place of Christian culture is found : Saint Maximin's basilica. Saint Maximin was built on an old lake that belonged to the Dominican order and is the oldest Gothic monument in Provence.

The basilica has three naves, accompanied by chapels. Fenestrado Baselico is the biggest with its 72,60 metres . The seven-sided apse is equally fantastic.
The remains of Mary Magdalene are conserved in the crypt of Saint Maximin. To protect these relics, King René had the walls that surround the village constructed. The basilica is also known for its organ that was recently restored. The Dominicans, Isnard and his nephew Joseph, are responsible for this organ. A big cultural musical activity takes place here during the summer festivals. |
