Sisteron
Sisteron is mostly a massive fortress facing Baune hill on the other side of the Durance river : two impressive monuments, one built by men, the other by Mother Nature, form the area where the town lies with its small streets and its piles of roofs. Located in the north of Provence near Dauphiné, Sisteron is definitelty charming.

The fortress powerfully towers above the old town. It was built in the XII century to protect the area and control the Durance. It was improved in the XVI and XIX centuries. At the top, the view reaches places as far as 100 kilometers. Bombed during WWII, the fortress was completely restored.
Located on top, Notre-Dame-des-Pommiers’s cathedral was built in the XII century in pure roman style.
The old town lies on the slope of the hill near the river ; though there’s no particular monument, we advise you to visit it. In the area, the Ganagobie priory church, which was built ten centuries ago, contains a gorgeous collection of mosaics. Benedictin friars live there today. |
